From the book Becoming O’Keeffe by Sarah Whitaker Peters. Photo of O’Keeffe by Alfred Stieglitz.
I borrowed a book on O’Keeffe from Pratt Institute’s Library. Someone had written in the margins:
More to the point compare Pamela Colman Smith, The Wave, 1903, Whitney Museum of American Art.
Becoming O’Keeffe, page 57.
Searching for Georgia, I again find Pamela. A trickster may be at work!
O’Keeffe and Colman Smith exhibited works in Stieglitz’s 291 art gallery in midtown New York. The art gallery was in operating from 1905 - 1917 and located at 291 Fifth Avenue. It is not clear if O’Keeffe and Colman Smith knew each other. I can’t imagine they didn’t, being among only a few women artists exhibiting in New York.
